'Ritmos Colombianos' presents Carlos Osorio's choreography

Cumbia Spirit School of Dance was born out of the simple request from friends who wanted to learn, to feel and move to the beat of South American rhythms. In many occassions groups of friends asked me to dance and to instruct them on how to step to this peculiarly simple music from the Atlantic Coasts of South America. The dance troupe Cumbia Spirit Dancers keep growing (See bios page); we have on-going rehearsals for professional dancers interested in learning Cumbia, and classes for those new to performance.

One-day Latin dance workshops.
It's the newest way to learn the Latin rhythms in a 3 hour workshop in the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. In the famous Woodstock, NY where music and arts nurture the soul. (Learn2dance at Workshops page)

Dancing With Our Elders is a new page for my group of seniors in Albany, and in the Ulster County who benefit from Cumbia and Latin dancing with me for several years now. (check the schedule for next class at Dancing With Our Elders page)

Research has taught me that Cumbia was danced in a circle, for the community, or in groups around the fire, like the dream I had when young:

"A circle of dancers moving excited around the bon fire; I couldn't hear the music, I was terrified but I couldn't wake up either. My eyes kept watching, my throat wanted to call out for help, but no muscle of mine could move. I was destined to observe the flowing of white skirts, the bare feet of white pants stomping on the ground, following a simple rhythm. I don't remember how long I was watching this movement. I just know it was a long time. Eight years ago, while teaching a mother and a five year-old boy how to do Cumbia, a sudden realization passed my mind: This is the journey of a boy with family, with dance to grow, teach and learn from this gift from the Creator."

My teaching style uses Cumbia as the platform from which to encourage people to dance using the simplicity, smoothness and style in this unique movement form. Embracing all Latin dances I have learned (Merengue, Bachata, Mambo, Samba, Salsa, Chacha, Lambada, Middle Eastern). Read more about Carlos Osorio's bio...

Students remind me how intricate Cumbia really is. (Read students comments here)A challenge to move from within yourself imitating the drums of ancient people irradiating joy. To me, Cumbia is simple and sometimes not easy to do, since we have to learn new ways to move; nevertheless, I'll make every effort to show you how...

This web site is a step closer to realize this dream: a school for the community to learn & enjoy dancing. It is my hope that these pages bring you useful/helpful information.

Cumbia means "celebration"
"To celebrate life one must have a story, an understanding that
we, humans, have the gift of transforming anything we are or do,
into something completely new."
